Assessing your cardiovascular risk

Dr. interviewed more than 82 000 nurses aged 20 to 35 years in 1982. During 14 years of follow up, 1,417 women were victims of cardiovascular disease and 838 of a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Given the results in women with irregular periods have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease by 25% and those with very irregular cycles of 67%. By cons, no link was established with the stroke.
According to Dr. Solomon, the study should not worry unnecessarily women with fluctuating cycles. Nevertheless, they can ask their doctor to assess their cardiac risk and should consider losing weight if obese.

According to Dr, the department of endocrinology and reproductive diseases at the Hospital BicĂȘtre, "two phenomena could explain these results. On the one hand, a high proportion of women experiencing irregular cycles suffers from a situation called polycystic ovary syndrome, marked by excessive levels of male hormones. On the other hand, irregular cycles may reflect a deficiency in estrogen, which is known protective role vis-Ă -vis the cardiovascular disease. "
